Co Cork, €1.95 million

In the famed sailing area of Roaring Water Bay, West Skeam Island measures 33 acres with two smaller islands, Leighillaum and Illaunatrumppaum. It has three recently renovated 1840s stone cottages clustered together around a courtyard by the pier and four beaches. The journey from the mainland takes a few minutes, via a year-round ferry service from Cunnamore Pier, just over an hour’s drive from Cork airport. There are plenty of picturesque islands and villages nearby, as well as a sailing school on neighbouring Heir Island. The market town of Skibbereen is a 10-minute drive from Cunnamore. Gwynedd, £500 a month

Ynys Giftan, in the Dwyrd Estuary, was gifted to the current Lord Harlech’s ancestors by Queen Anne in the early 1700s, hence the name, which means ‘Anne’s Gift Island’. It overlooks the Italianate village of Portmeirion in the Snowdonia National Park and enjoys panoramic views of the Welsh coastline, mountains and the Irish Sea. The rent is a steal, but it comes with a 20-year Improving Lease, offering an exciting restoration project with a farmhouse that must be renovated as part of the bargain. There are numerous outbuildings and 17.74 acres and, as the island is a blank canvas, it could be turned into either a tourism enterprise or private idyll. Strutt & Parker (01743 816885)

Argyll and Bute, £125,000

This two-bedroom cottage is on Easdale Island, in the Firth of Lorn by Oban, the smallest inhabited Inner Hebridean island, which is about two minutes from the mainland by ferry—or longer if you choose to swim! It’s a conservation area and cars are not permitted, so the islanders use wheelbarrows to transport their shopping. The midterrace cottage overlooks the village green and has a private garden. Dawsons (01631 563901)

Isle of Anglesey, £1.75 million

With views of the Snowdonia mountain range, Craig y Don, which is said to date back to the mid 16th century, enjoys an extremely private setting with direct frontage onto the Menai Strait. It has seven/eight bedrooms and the five acres of grounds include woodland. Jackson-stops & Staff (01244 328361)

Isle of Wight, £1.575 million

Grade Ii-listed, handsome Godshill Park House is set amid farmland and mature parkland on the edge of the village of Godshill. It has five bedrooms, comes with an adjoining three-bedroom cottage and a one-bedroom annexe and has excellent access to bridle paths for riding and walking. The property has previously seen success as a holiday let and is approached via a private drive of almost a third of a mile. Biles & Co (01983 872335)
