Planting a future

ASMALL family wood in Cornwall has been named the UK’S best by the Woodland Trust. In four acres, the 1,000 saplings planted by Chris and Maria Musgrove, with help from the Trust’s Morewoods initiative, which supplies trees, funding and advice, impressed the judges as the family had shunned the idea of making money from the land. ‘Friends said we could rent the land out for grazing or apply for planning permission to develop it, but what we’ve created far outweighs anything financial,’ says Mr Musgrove. ‘We need to encourage a love of Nature, because the next generation of trees won’t survive otherwise and we can’t survive without trees.’ Since 2010, Morewoods has seen the creation of nearly 4,000 acres of woodland and the planting of more than two million trees across the UK. Anyone who wishes to plant a minimum half hectare (1¼ acres) of land can sign up at www.woodlandtrust. org.uk/morewoods
