Christie comes to County Hall

Country Life Every Week - - Town & Country -

THIS autumn, the magnificent chamber at County Hall, London SE1, will host a groundbreaking production of Agatha Christie’s Witness for the Prosecution, the author’s favourite of her works. The play, which focuses on a murder trial and runs from October 6 to March 11, 2018, rides the wave of the crime writer’s resurgence this year, with seven new adaptations commissioned by the BBC and the release of a new Murder on the Orient Express film, starring Kenneth Branagh as Poirot, in November. It’s hoped that the South Bank courtroom setting for Witness, which is fully supported by the Christie family and for which London County Council has loaned its headquarters, will bring the audience into the action. It will be the first major production of a play by Christie, who is the bestselling novelist of all time, outsold only by the Bible and Shakespeare, to open in the capital since the 1960s; the last, The Mousetrap, is still going strong after 65 years.
