Wait a minute, Mr Milkman

Country Life Every Week - - Letters To The Editor -

THIS morning, I received a letter from my milkman —who delivers milk to me three times a week at 4am— to say that, as our local dairy is soon to stop producing liquid milk, he will be sourcing it from a firm near Weymouth, the only Dorset dairy now sourcing and supplying local milk.

How tragic that, despite living just in Somerset within a mile of Dorset and Wiltshire and wishing to buy local milk, I’m only able to get it, via my local dairy in Gillingham, from Weymouth. How have the EU Common Agricultural Policy and our supermarkets reduced the proud West Country dairy tradition to this sad situation? Will Michael Gove be our knight in shining armour? Lucy Nelson, by email
