Putting the brakes on

Country Life Every Week - - Letters To The Editor -

IWOULD like to add some balance to the article by David Tomlinson on gundogs (‘Slowly but surely’, July 26). The way in which a dog is trained, handled and conditioned all has an effect and, in this respect, it’s relatively easy to get a trialling ‘rocket’ to last all day. I speak from experience, with one of my current crop of spaniels having the full dose of ‘red ink’ that David refers to, yet it regularly goes a full day in the field, is a perfect deerstalking companion and a family dog to boot. David might consider that you can fit brakes to a speedy spaniel, but you can’t retrofit an accelerator. Robert Kerr-bonner, by email
