What to see this week
‘Measure Draw Build’ is an exhibition by George Saumarez Smith, a Director at ADAM Architects, of his own work. As the name suggests, it juxtaposes studies, designs and photographs of completed buildings in an attempt to explain his creative process. The drawings are particularly satisfying, condensing material onto the double-page spread of a notebook. Implicit in the exhibition is the idea that drawing permits the detailed understanding of existing structures, forms and designs. From that knowledge, moreover, it’s possible to create new buildings that are simultaneously contemporary as well as being informed by the architecture of the past; that they are—in other words—classical both in form and in the sense of transcending time. The exhibition, which is accompanied by a catalogue, runs at the RIBA until November 26.
