One of the leading ceramics dealers at the Biennale was Altomani & Sons of Milan, which attracted considerable museum interest, with not just a rarity, but apparently an unique piece from the Casino di San Marco, where the Medici Grand Duke Francesco I (reigned 1574–87) had a pottery, as well as pietra dura workshops and a laboratory. The piece was a guttatoio, or fanciful 13½in longboat, modelled in maiolica by Leonardo Bettisi of Faenza, called Don Pino, some time between 1568 and 1588. On the prow was a shield with the Medici arms supported by strange sea nymphs, and it stood on dolphin feet.
