Last month, a panel of es­teemed judges (com­pris­ing Coun­try Life Edi­tor Mark Hedges, the Ritz’s Deputy Chair­man andrew Love, sav­ile Row shirt de­signer Emma Wil­lis and food writer tom Parker Bowles) gath­ered for lunch in the Miche­lin-starred Ritz res­tau­rant on London’s Pic­cadilly to pon­der who should be crowned Coun­try Life’s 2017 Gen­tle­man of the Year. af­ter much de­lib­er­a­tion, aided by fine wines and de­lec­ta­ble dishes—lan­gous­tine fol­lowed by roast grouse—spe­cially pre­pared by the ho­tel’s Ex­ec­u­tive Chef, John Wil­liams MBE, it was unan­i­mously de­cided that this year’s ac­co­lade should go to the ac­tor Colin Firth.
