Jackdaw vs back door

Country Life Every Week - - Letters To The Editor -

IHAVE thoroughly enjoyed the conversation on jackdaws (‘I’m all right, Jack’, May 16 and Letters, May 30, June 6, June 20 and June 27), but thought I must warn readers what else these birds get up to. Last July, we had the back door decorated and reglazed. On our return from holiday shortly afterwards, I took one look at the door and thought someone had attempted to break in. The police thought our alarm must have gone off and that the offender had fled. A neighbour, however, thought the culprit was probably a jackdaw—apparently, they love putty containing linseed oil. Sure enough, the next day, we caught a pair of jackdaws taking it in turns to balance on the door handle and peck away. A year later, the birds still come for their fix and the door is yet to be redecorated. Hilary Horsford, Wiltshire
