Feeling ratty

Country Life Every Week - - Letters To The Editor -

FOLLOWING the letters about jackdaws (May 30, June 6, June 20, June 27 and July 4), I have a tale about a young magpie. Last week, we found a large baby bird sitting in distress on the pavement under a tree. As we were looking at it, there was a thud and a dead rat dropped from the tree onto the pavement a few feet away. The RSPCA said that the parents of the chick might come to its aid, but we felt that this wasn’t going to happen as the adult magpies had been fussing around for a long time. The other recommendation was to take it to the vet, which we did. I did wonder if the rat had been an attempt by the parents to feed their baby? Karen Staartjes, London
