Autumn is the ideal season to slow down and appreciate the here and now, so discover the health benefits of mindfulness and meditation

THE RUSTLE of walking through crisp autumn leaves; the glittering sparkle from frost-encrusted seed heads on a cold, bright morning; or the mists circling and pooling around grass and heathland – autumn is a feast for the senses. It’s also the perfect opportunity to still our minds, take stock of what’s around us, and to experience mindfulness – a form of meditation that not only keeps us grounded but may also improve our mental and physical health. “Mindfulness and meditation can help to calm mind and body, but whereas traditional methods of meditation involve clearing away distractions, mindfulness is about training yourself to become more aware of thoughts and feelings,” explains Joanna Carson, who leads the Mental Health Foundation’s Be Mindful campaign (bemindful.co.uk). “It can be viewed as zoning in, rather than zoning out, helping us become more in tune with our emotions.”
