TAKE PART IN CIDER PRESSING
Do you know your Rattler from your Dabinett? Join in one of the many cider-pressing days happening this month and you soon will, as they are both old-fashioned varieties of cider apple. Some orchards, particularly in Somerset and Herefordshire, hold ‘pick and press’ days, where you select your own apples, then mill and squeeze the juice from them through traditional wooden presses. Apple lovers can also attend Apple Day on 21 October, which was launched in 1990 by environmental charity Common Ground and is a celebration of apples and orchards. Look out for events near you or organise your own – a pack is available at commonground.org.uk.
