Put in supports for newly planted dahlias and other tall perennials

Sow fast-growing hardy annuals outside to flower this year Clear weeds from around fruit trees and mulch after rain Keep sowing salads and herbs succession­ally Set up crop protection for strawberri­es, brassicas and carrots

Prune spring-flowering shrubs, eg ribes and philadelph­us, after blooming

Plant out courgettes, runner beans, squash and pumpkins

Remove any build-up of blanket weed and duckweed from ponds

Ventilate and shade plants in the greenhouse on warm days

Take time out to smell the roses, especially varieties that flower only once per season
