May is probably my favourite month on the smallholding – the garden is bursting into life, the livestock are at their best and there is the promise of a lovely summer to come (we hope!). Many of us will be off to rural shows – and maybe even take part. This month we have a special feature on the many things to consider if you plan to start showing your livestock, including interviews with smallholders who are experienced in the show ring (see page 8).
Two of our writers, Tim Tyne and Sally Morgan, have new books out. Sally’s is called Living on One Acre or Less, and she is summarising the key themes over our next three issues. See page 14 for the first part. Tim’s book, written with his wife Dot, is called Viable
Self-Sufficiency, and is hailed by the publishers as the most important book about self-sufficiency since John Seymour’s The Complete Book of Self
Sufficiency. Next month we will be giving away 10 copies of this superb book. Enjoy!
