TIP Breaking away? Think again!
Two of the commonest reasons given for wanting to become a smallholder are: a) wanting to be able to keep poultry and livestock, and b) wanting to break away from the shackles of regular employment.
Well, I’m sorry to have to burst the bubble, but once you start keeping animals you’ll be tied down far more effectively than ever you were when conventionally employed. And what happens if you’re ill? You can’t just ‘phone in sick and leave it at that; you’ll have to find someone to shoulder the workload during the period that you’re incapacitated, and probably pay them for doing so.
