Mass trespass: not in my name
I note from your May edition that Stuart Maconie has been elected President of the Ramblers.
I also note that not for the first time he has praised those who took part in the Mass Trespass on Kinder Scout in 1932.
I’m well aware of the attractions of Kinder Scout, but the fact remains that in 1932 the moorlands were privately owned and those who trespassed were breaking the law. There are other ways to get the desired outcome without resorting to mass disobedience.
Am I the only reader who is uncomfortable at the thought of a Ramblers president who supports people who break the law if they don’t get what they want? Fighting to keep public rights of way open is a laudable aim, but celebrating those who trespassed on private property is a different matter altogether. Mike Turner, Email
Ed’s comment: Interested to hear all views – but not sure we would today be enjoying the world’s best access without the mass trespass.
