A campaign to protect the UNESCO status of one of Scotland’s most important geological sites has received a boost from TV presenter Dr Tori Herridge. The North West Highlands Geopark, where Tori filmed part of her Channel 4 series Walking Through Time, hopes to crowdfund £70,000 to continue its work.
The park includes the breathtaking Assynt region and peaks such as Stac Pollaidh and Suilven. The geopark team plans to upgrade the park’s interpretation facilities before its UNESCO status is reassessed in 2019. But with funding streams drying up, their work – and thus the UNESCO status – are now at risk.
“The geopark has Britain’s oldest rocks and it has been fundamental in shaping our understanding of the world,” says Tori.
“Their work opens people’s eyes to the bigger picture, transforming every view into the latest chapter in that epic geological tale. Without this money, they won’t be able to continue their work.”
