Banker John McCaig com­mis­sioned the mon­u­ment tow­er­ing over Oban, pro­vid­ing em­ploy­ment for fish­er­men and ma­sons fac­ing des­ti­tu­tion fol­low­ing the de­cline of the fish­ing and quar­ry­ing in­dus­tries. Based on the Colos­seum of An­cient Rome, it bankrupted MacCaig and was never com­pleted. Oban’s sea­wa­ter spa is an­other un­fin­ished folly.
