RRP: £70Target price £45 Berghaus have made an absurdly comfortable pair of trousers here. The Ortlers are extremely flexible, no matter how much ducking and diving you put them through. Although the fit is relaxed, they aren’t too baggy, so I was never worried they might get caught on a stray branch. And there are unobtrusive drawcords in the hem so you can tighten the fit around your ankles if you need to. The fabric is soft shell, so they are water and wind resistant, yet they always felt well ventilated, especially when I opened the thigh vents, allowing heat to transfer through a mesh. The main pockets are curiously front-facing and heavy items can almost touch in the middle (gentlemen – don’t put anything sharp in there!), but they’re plenty deep and spacious enough, and there’s a small zipped security pocket on the right hip for the likes of car keys. There’s no pocket for a map, which is a bit of a shame, but a minor criticism of a smashing pair of trousers. MP
