Great Storm? It was brilliant

I can’t tell you how delighted I was at seeing your feature on the 30th anniversary of the great storm last month.

My wife and I spent many a happy year volunteering for the National Trust when we used to live in Sussex – in fact that’s how we met, in 1990 not long after the storm.

Slindon will always be one of the best sites to work on, as the wardens are great. The scenery is stunning and it is a lovely feeling knowing our hard work over the years has been worthwhile.

It was hard work at times clearing away the damage, which was still around years later, but ultimately it was very rewarding looking back at the great work that we had all accomplished.

The other things that helped were the bonfires, kettle heating on the fire and the occasional jacket potato – cooked in the embers.

This was a happy time for us, meeting lifelong friends, and learning skills that I was able to use in my paid work. Ian Stephens, Email
