The For­est of Dean is bor­dered by the towns of Ross-on-Wye, Cin­der­ford, Lyd­ney and Mon­mouth. The A40 runs to the north and the A48 to the south.

WALK HERE

Tom’s walk was mostly off­piste, but there’s a crack­ing For­est of Dean route at the back of this is­sue – just turn to Walk 4.

WHERE TO STAY

WHERE TO EAT

The Forestry Com­mis­sion vis­i­tor cen­tre at Beechen­hurst has an ex­cel­lent café (01594 824662, www.forestry.gov.uk) of­fer­ing lo­cally-sourced food and the chance to try out the Gruf­falo-spot­ting trail.
