PLAN YOUR TRIP
The Forest of Dean is bordered by the towns of Ross-on-Wye, Cinderford, Lydney and Monmouth. The A40 runs to the north and the A48 to the south.
Tom’s walk was mostly offpiste, but there’s a cracking Forest of Dean route at the back of this issue – just turn to Walk 4.
WHERE TO STAY
Our walk starts in Cinderford, so we’d recommend The Belfry Hotel (01594 827858, www.thebelfryhotel. co.uk) which has doubles with breakfast for £60 and main meals from £7.50. Alternatively, Brayne Court B&B (01594 822163, www. braynecourtbedandbreakfast.co.uk) offers doubles for £100 per night.
WHERE TO EAT
The Forestry Commission visitor centre at Beechenhurst has an excellent café (01594 824662, www.forestry.gov.uk) offering locally-sourced food and the chance to try out the Gruffalo-spotting trail.
