Mid-layers generally have the greatest flexibility and can make a walk fantastic or terrible. The purpose of a mid-layer is to continue the wicking process, and to build up layers of loft gradually. Closer-fitting thin layers (such as microfleeces, woollen tops or thin ‘puffy’ layers) are great because they can be swapped on-and-off as needed, like adjusting a thermostat.
