DEVIL’S CHIMNEY, Gloucestershire
This crooked limestone pillar of mysterious origin stands above a quarry in the Cotswold Edge, where it’s said to vent smoke from the furnaces of hell. Driven underground after hurling stones at churchgoers from Leckhampton Hill, the Devil is kept at bay by coins left atop the chimney.
