Wild line

Corrour on the West Highland Line is the highest mainline station in Britain (1338 feet) and the remotest too, 10 miles from the nearest road in the peak-ringed peat of Rannoch Moor. You may recognise it from

Trainspotting and while they barely left the platform, Loch Ossian lies just a mile to the east. Even better, hop off at Rannoch* station to the south and trace trails for 10 miles across the wilds to the loch, stay in the only building (a Scottish youth hostel) and stroll out to Corrour for breakfast at the Station House, and the morning train.
