D is for dales

- www.lfto.com/ bonusroutes

The word has come to be associated with the Dales of Yorkshire, but a dale is any English or Scottish lowland valley, and the word probably shares a common root with the Welsh dol, meaning meadow, pasture, valley. A dale is a place where peace seems to collect, and the world can be cut down to a size defined by the skyline for as long as you choose to stay there. Such is the role the Derbyshire Dales – Dove Dale, Wolfscote Dale, Long Dale, Lathkill Dale, Monsal Dale, Cressbrook Dale, Matlock Dale played for the work-weary of the industrial north, and it’s no less important nor effective a role dales play today.
