Reaching a settlement

-

I can vouch for Stuart Maconie’s Found on Foot recommendation in the January issue to walk the Ashton Canal towards Manchester and find the Moravian settlement at Fairfield. In the Eighties I walked this canal and through the settlement regularly to my school, and took many lessons in the Moravian houses. Being so well hidden, the settlement is often missed even by locals and proves that walking off a main route has many rewards.

Living in South Devon I have swapped the towpath for the South West Coast Path, the locks for the lighthouse and a smart school uniform for a silly hat, but I have many precious memories of walking the canal.

It only takes a few words in a CW article to kick the nostalgia button and make me want to revisit great walks or inspire me to try something new. So please keep those non-stop ideas coming! Gail Addison, Chillington, Devon
