BLACKTOFT SANDS

An RSPB reserve on the Yorkshire’s Ouse estuary, the first northern location to be colonised. Now about 50 avocet pairs grace the site from March to July.

CLEY MARSHES

Norfolk was first colonised in 1977; today there are up to 80 pairs. These Norfolk Wildlife Trust hides are among the best places to study avocets up close.

MINSMERE

The premier RSPB reserve, located in Suffolk, is the traditiona­l place for seeing avocets in their element and for soaking up the bird’s powerful story.

POOLE HARBOUR

Dorset is among the finest sites for wintering avocets in Britain and there are specialist cruises to allow you to spot the birds at their best.

UPTON WARREN

Worcesters­hire Wildlife Trust near Bromsgrove is one of the bird’s latest outposts in the Midlands. Up to eight pairs have bred since 2003.
