BERGLER BOOTS HANWAG, £235 • Women’s version: Bergler Lady

These beautiful mountain boots are tough enough for the hills, but are ruggedly stylish for everyday wear, too. They are made using traditional double-stitching – two strong rows of stitches. This takes time and skill – a level of craftsmanship that explains the stiff price tag.

There is no doubting the quality of the finished boots, though. The Nubuck uppers are tough and the boots are extremely sturdy. Pull them on, and they feel a little bulky.

The fit makes up for that. The boots are snug around the ankle, where the lacing hooks are well placed to keep your foot stable. The toe box, in contrast, feels relatively roomy – allowing space for your toes to swell and splay a little.

With care and love – waxing the uppers regularly – they should last for years, looking better with age. If the tough Vibram soles ever become worn, they can be replaced, thanks to that doublestitched construction. JP VERDICT Good looking, comfortable and beautifully made. www.hanwag.com
