At high tide water is re­leased into the la­goon, turn­ing the hy­dro tur­bines to gen­er­ate en­ergy. Tidal la­goons are more ef­fi­cient than bar­rages, which only gen­er­ate power us­ing 'out­flow' water.

At low tide the cap­tured high tide water in the la­goon is re­leased, and the rush­ing out­flow water passes over the tur­bines, turn­ing them again and gen­er­at­ing fur­ther en­ergy.
