6 Allen Banks and Staward Gorge

The Vic­to­ri­ans loved wilder­ness and the Ro­man­tic artists led the charge to Bri­tain’s wild places. Allen Banks was one of the first planned wilder­ness gar­dens, a land­scaped river gorge in an­cient wood­land. It has re­cently suf­fered se­vere flood dam­age so needs on­go­ing sup­port. Oh, and it’s home to some crack­ing wildlife. NE47 7BP.
