ACHING FOR ACRES
Why has the football pitch become a unit of measurement (October issue, Moorland Rescue)? Surely country people can visualise an acre more easily than a football pitch? I know I can.
There was usually a good reason for the historical measurement, based on the day’s work of man and horse and, although tractor and combine harvester have changed productivity, old habits die hard.
When we achieve Brexit, will we return to acres rather than hectares? And what about restoring the rod, pole or perch, as recited in my school days only 80 years ago? We could also have chains – 22 yards – for the benefit of cricketers, not footballers!
