What’s the problem?
The Environment Agency says it has seen an increase in pollution from farms over the past seven years. Natural Resources Wales has noted a rise, with 70-120 river pollution incidents a year, of which 60% can be attributed to dairy farms. This pollution results in the death of fish and other river wildlife – and affects drinking water quality.
Mark Lloyd, chief executive of the Angling Trust, commented: “Agricultural pollution is the biggest issue affecting our rivers and is the main cause of failure of our rivers to achieve good ecological status.”
