What are Mummers’ Plays?

Countryfile Magazine - - November In The Country -

These traditional, amateur folk acts were particularly prevalent in the 18th and 19th centuries. Performed in pubs, homes and on the streets, they often tell the tale of a comical doctor and his miraculous revival of a vanquished hero, such as Saint George. The plays are held throughout the year, including All Souls’ Day on 2 November, and are especially popular in Cheshire and southern England.
