Safety fears rise at new junction after latest crash
ROUNDABOUT IS STILL UNDER CONSTRUCTION
RESIDENTS say a crash at new junction under construction in Coventry was an accident waiting to happen.
A car and a taxi collided on Wednesday where a new roundabout is being built at the junction of Banner Lane and Broad Lane.
One of the cars, a red Ford Fiesta, was left with serious damage, but no-one was seriously injured.
One resident said there have been many accidents at the junction since the work started.
Paul Luff, who lives in the area, said: “We had just said the night before that there would be a bad accident. Then the next morning I saw it all happen.
“I do not understand why they just shut down the work. You can’t just down tools and not carry on.
“There is no other way to describe it other than a joke.
“It is an accident waiting to happen.”
Work has been going on for at least six months for new drainage and gulleys to be installed, a new cycle path, a new highway surface water storage area and a new roundabout.
Work has now stopped, and Mr Luff said he is fed up of seeing the work incomplete.
He added: “We are fed up of seeing it and one day someone is going to get seriously hurt. “They cannot just down tools.” In November, we reported that work was starting on the junction, with work to be completed in March.
A message on the Coventry City Council website says: “We have temporarily stopped work on the site while we work with Severn Trent to identify how best to divert the water main that runs under the site, this is a complex issue, but we want to reassure you that we are working hard on this.
“As soon as we are clear on the best approach our team will return to site to complete the job.
“There will be no further road closures or changes – and the junction will operate as it is now until we resume work.”
A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 10am to a two car road traffic collision.
“There were no injuries but crews were concerned for the overall condition of an elderly man. They took him to University Hospital to get checked over.
“A woman was also assessed but discharged at the scene.”
