Bridge too far despite gutsy ’Bold display
NUNEATON are now tenth in the table following their defeat by Bees, two places and nine points ahead of county rivals Newbold.
Phil Reed’s newly-promoted team slipped to an eighth defeat in ten Midlands Premier outings at Bridgnorth, but did at least leave Shropshire with the consolation of a losing bonus point.
And it could have been substantially more, since the match ended with the visitors camped on the home line seeking the converted try that would have delivered the four points.
Although Bridgnorth opened the scoring through Connor Nicholls, Newbold’s big pack dominated the remainder of a first half which they ended with a five-point advantage thanks to a try under the posts from Kyle Furlong, converted by Dan O’Brien who also added a penalty.
However, as so many times this season, ‘Bold suffered during a second half which brought them only three further points from their full back’s reliable right boot.
And the hosts took full advantage to first reclaim the lead through Elliot Brooks, who took advantage of some neat handling to touch down a score which Llew Williams converted.
They then sealed the 19-13 win through a scrum pushover, which supplied Nicholls with a second try, and Williams with a second conversion.
