Daly’s move to Sarries ‘is a bit of a head scratcher’

-

SARACENS’ decision to splash the cash to sign Elliot Daly was a ‘surprising’ choice according to Wasps director of rugby Dai Young.

The 26-year-old, who starred in England’s 44-8 Six Nations victory over France, had his heavily-rumoured summer with to Allianz Park confirmed last week.

Speaking to the press for the first time since the announcement was made in midweek, Young would not be drawn on Saracens’ ability to retain its international stars and recruit more all within the salary cap - but did raise some question marks about the move.

“It’s not a surprise no, it is a bit of a head scratcher,” said Young, when pressed on the salary cap issue.

“That’s not for me, that’s for other people to look at. “Not that he is not a quality player, not that he is not worth it, because he is, but they have got a number of other players as well.

“That’s not for me to speculate on, it’s not my business what Sarries do.”

Young revealed Wasps fought hard to keep the British Lion at the Ricoh Arena but stressed it wasn’t a financially-driven decision to leave, adding that the appeal of returning to London was a motivating factor.

He said: “We did everything we could. You can only do what you can do, there’s lots of things that have been written and most of it is rubbish as normal.

“He certainly hasn’t gone to Sarries for less money that’s one thing. It isn’t a massive money decision. He’s not that way inclined but nobody moves for pay cuts or the same money.

“He’s moved to play for a new challenge and to play for a club that’s been pretty successful over the past few seasons and there is an attraction moving back to London as well.”
