(k2tog, p2tog) to end. 12sts. Cut yarn and thread through. Pull up sts tightly and sew head seam to neck. Gather round cast on sts and pull up tightly. Sew seam for about 16cm (6in). Turn right side out. Put the red lentils into a plastic food bag and, leaving some air space, tie a knot. Insert a little stuffing into base of snowman, then add bag. Add more filling all the way around the base so that the bag is not seen. Sew seam to body, adding more filling around the whole base as you are sewing. Stuff head with filling. Sew remaining seam, adding filling where necessary. Place two buttons for eyes slightly over half way up head with about 3.5cm (1½in) between them. Check back seam is at centre back, then sew eyes in position. Use four ball-shaped buttons for coals to make a curved mouth shape with the two lowest buttons starting 3cm (1¼in) up from base of head. Sew in place securely. Using the template on page 99, cut a nose from orange felt. Curl up tightly to create a cone shape and sew edges together. Place on face at centre of space between eyes and mouth and sew in place. Use three small wooden toggle buttons to decorate body.

Stick arms (make 2)

Using two strands of Sandstone together, cast on 20sts. St-st 6 rows. Cast off. Gather round sts at one end and pull up tightly. Sew seam with reverse st-st to outside for 3cm (1¼in). Fold one pipe cleaner in half and twist lightly. Insert folded end into arm, then sew remaining seam. Stretching arm slightly, trim pipe cleaner to fit. Gather round stitches of this end and pull up tightly, covering the pipe cleaner completely. Make a little mini branch for each arm by casting on 4sts, then casting off using two strands of sandstone together. Using the templates on page 99, cut four mittens from jute. Place two together and sew seam, leaving a gap at entrance (don't worry if the fabric begins to fray a little, it will add to the character of your snowman). Push arm inside mitten, leaving 6.5cm (2½in) of arm showing, then sew across mitten, right through arm to secure. Sew mini branch to arm near mitten. Pin arms at side of body in line with top toggle button on chest. Ensure they are even and sew to body securely. Bend arms into desired position. Take a length of tartan and fray the ends. Wrap around the neck and sew in place.

With right-side facing, place top on top of hat and sew seam together. Stuff with filling. Place hat on top of brim and sew together securely. Place the hat on top of the head, positioned slightly to one side, then sew securely in place to finish. You've done it!
