ZX Spectrum Next funded

An effort to recreate the Sinclair ZX Spectrum has successfully passed its crowdfunding goal, with production of the first mass-produced boards scheduled to take place before the end of the year.

Built around a Xilinx Spartan field-programmable gate array (FPGA), the ZX Spectrum Next claims full hardware and software compatibility with original Spectrum games and hardware, while also boasting improvements such as 512KB of memory expandable to 2.5MB, a double-speed 7MHz mode, hardware sprites, native HDMI output, and a case and keyboard designed by Rick Dickinson (interviewed in Issue 137). More information on the open source project is available from www.specnext.com
