Brits on the up

Cycling Weekly - - Letters -

One thing that has gone unnoticed with this year’s Tour de France, as regards to riders who have a link with Great Britain: the media have failed to notice the facts behind the three British riders who finished in the top 10.

1. Chris Froome rides for the UK thanks to his parentage.

2. Dan Martin rode as a junior under GB colours, and switched to Ireland because the GB system did not cater for road race-only riders.

3. Simon Yates is the first GB rider to finish in the top 10 of the Tour who has gone through the lottery-funded World Class Performance Plan (WCPP). Geraint Thomas also came through the WCPP and would likely have finished in the top 10 were it not for succumbing to accidents.

Dan Martin was the opportunist on stage finishes in the mountains. It also gives you the impression he was trying to get Simon Yates to see that he finished in that group of top-10 finishers.
