Edinburgh > Kelso, 190.1km

The first stage of the 14th edition of the modern race began in the Scottish capital of Edinburgh, before venturing south, keeping the east coast in range and then looping through the Scottish borders.

A break of eight riders, including Gorka Izagirre (Movistar) and Mark Mcnally (Wanty-groupe Gobert), formed, but crosswinds meant that BMC Racing attempted to force a split in the peloton with 63km remaining, drastically reducing the break’s lead.

There were a few attacks in the last hour of the race, but all proved fruitless, with the many sprint teams working together to ensure a sprint in Kelso.

Orica-scott, working for Caleb Ewan, led the pack in the final few hundred metres and their work was rewarded, with Ewan given the win in a photo finish alongside Edvald Boasson Hagen, Dimension Data’s designated choice, Alexander Kristoff (Katusha-alpecin) and Elia Viviani (Team Sky). Race leader: Caleb Ewan (Aus) Orica-scott
