STAGE 3

Crosswinds in the final 40km as the peloton passed along the banks of the River Humber were required to potentially prevent yet another sprint finish, but instead it was rain that greeted the riders.

Five riders teamed together to compose the day’s break, with Graham Briggs of Jtl-condor adding to his lead in the sprint and points classification on home roads, securing him both jerseys before the break was brought back in advance of the finish in Scunthorpe.

A small climb in the final kilometre was enough to stall the sprint teams’ leadouts, with Philippe Gilbert of Quick Step Floors pouncing clear.

The Tour of Flanders winner and former world champion quickly built a sizeable gap, but as the road plateaued, the Belgian was caught by the onrushing pack, with Caleb Ewan, Edvald Boasson Hagen, and Alexander Kristoff battling it out at the finish line, with Ewan proving the fastest.
