After three successive stages where the break has struggled to form a coherent pack, stage four’s five-man contingent worked strongly together and came the closest all week to pulling off an unexpected win. The five had a lead of over two minutes with 20km remaining, and still held a 60-second advantage as they passed the 10km to go sign. However, the might of the sprint teams eventually brought the escapees back into their collective midst with 2,500m until the finish, setting the finale up for yet another sprint finish.

Quick Step Floors were the dominant team in the sprint, first Zdenek Stybar and then Maximiliano Richeze leading out Fernando Gaviria perfectly. The Colombian jumped off Richeze’s wheel and charged for the line while fending off the accelerations of Elia Viviani, Dylan Groenewegen and Alexander Kristoff.

Ewan found himself out of position and unable to contest the sprint, finishing down in 15th. Race leader: Elia Viviani (Ita) Team Sky
