Stage winner: Caleb Ewan (Aus) Orica-scott
Newmarket > Aldeburgh, 187km
After a break in the rhythm with yesterday’s time trial, normal service was resumed on the race’s sixth stage. A group of seven riders, including three of the four domestic Continental teams, went up the road early and built a lead that stuck around the two to three-minute mark for most of the day.
Brit James Shaw (Lotto-soudal), clearly the strongest rider in the break, tried to motivate a greater effort in the closing kilometres to keep it away, and Alex Dowsett (Movistar) also tried a lone attack from the peloton but the sprinters were not to be denied. Having safely negotiated a fast downhill run to the final tight corner with around 300m to go, Caleb Ewan (Orica-scott) hit the front and won by several lengths over Quick Step rival Fernando Gaviria.
