In an­swer to Wil­liam’s email about lack of spon­sor­ship by sun cream man­u­fac­tur­ers (CW Oc­to­ber 12), in ac­tual fact the Ger­man cos­met­ics com­pany Nivea be­came the first non-bi­cy­cle com­pany to spon­sor a team, in 1954. The Ital­ian team Ganna told its leader Fiorenzo Magni that it would not be able to con­tinue un­less fur­ther spon­sor­ship was found so he ar­ranged for the cos­met­ics com­pany to be the main backer of Nivea-fuchs. The team lasted un­til 1956.
