National Track Championships | January 26-28 | Manchester
Katie Archibald dominated proceedings at the British National Track Championships at the weekend, winning three red, white and blue-striped jerseys.
Archibald was an almost permanent fixture on the boards, having entered five events over the course of the three-day competition. It was a gamble that paid off handsomely, with three victories and a podium place.
The Scot formed one half of the most exciting moment of the weekend when she won the scratch race in imperious style, reeling in a late break over the course of the final four laps before taking the sprint. It was followed with her brother John putting in a similarly impressive ride to gain a lap on the points race field and wrap up a double Archibald victory, and his first National Championship jersey.
Katie Archibald said: “I’ve never felt that excited about someone else’s race. I thought I cared before but…”
She added: “My breakthrough was bronze in the individual pursuit, and that’s what my brother did [on Friday]. I thought that’s nice, now he’ll work his way through the ranks, and then the d*ckhead goes and gets a jersey.
“He has always been a good bike rider but this is his first season on the track and he’s come in storming. This is probably his strength all along and we hadn’t found it until now.”
John Archibald said: “Watching the scratch race it was crazy seeing Katie almost leading out herself, I just got that adrenalin rush before taking to the start line for my race.”
The results of the Archibalds spearheaded a strong weekend for Scots, with Jack Carlin also taking his first individual national title in the sprint, before teaming up with Jason Kenny, Ryan Owens and Philip Hindes to win the team sprint. Meanwhile, Callum Skinner placed second in the kilo, leaving Scottish Cycling coaches confident that they have a raft of good options for selection ahead of the Commonwealth Games in April.
