Tour de France stages are short­ened to pre­vent the need to ride overnight.

Rid­ers are given whis­tles to warn peo­ple they are com­ing (pri­mar­ily used on down­hills). Rid­ers no longer have to fin­ish each stage with the bike they started with.

Eddy Mer­ckx’s crash in a stage fi­nale leads to a 1km rul­ing on time losses (now 3km). The num­ber of cy­clists per team is re­duced from 10 to nine.
