CHANGE FOR THE BETTER
Tour de France stages are shortened to prevent the need to ride overnight.
Riders are given whistles to warn people they are coming (primarily used on downhills). Riders no longer have to finish each stage with the bike they started with.
Eddy Merckx’s crash in a stage finale leads to a 1km ruling on time losses (now 3km). The number of cyclists per team is reduced from 10 to nine.
