TRAVEL

Malaga is the nearest airport served by regular, direct flights from a choice of UK airports. From there it’s 160km by road to Berja. Public transport is limited, so car hire is the best bet if you’re going it alone.

ACCOMMODATION

Hotels are limited in Berja. We stayed with Vamos Cycling, which offers bed and breakfast (with optional evening meal) at a town house in Cadiar, about 45 minutes from Berja. It also offers training weeks and packages based around local sportives, as well as winter training camps on the Almerian coast. The 2016 six-night La Indomable package, including B&B, transfers, guided rides and entry fee, costs £465 per person. More details at vamoscycling.com. Thanks to Gary and Sarah Williams at Vamos Cycling for hosting our trip, to Gary’s club, Club Ciclista de Berja, for arranging transport for our photographer, and to Martin Knott Thompson at Cycling Rentals for our last-minute replacement bike. His Race Pack deals start at around £140. For more information visit cycling-rentals.com.
