Tailfin T1 carbon pannier rack
£399.99 (with two SL bags), tailfin.cc
ouring is dead; long live bikepacking! That’s the mantra of many hip and trendy adventure cyclists nowadays, for whom the main desire is to go further, faster. That means there is no longer any place for girderlike pannier racks on which to pile your expedition tent and bars of Kendal Mint Cake.
Tailfin is the sleek alternative. The majority of the T1 rack is made from carbon fibre, meaning it weighs just 350g, which the brand is proud to state is less than the weight of a can of cola. Most old fashioned racks would be about the same weight as a two-litre bottle of the fizzy brown stuff.
What’s more, you don’t need specific bosses on your frame to fit this rack; it will attach to any road bike. All you have to do is swap out your rear quick-release for Tailfin’s specific design, fix the rack to it and attach the other end to your seatpost with a firm-but-gentle rubber grip. The 22-litre waterproof SL bags are equally lightweight, and clip into place without any unnecessary faff.
The price may be on the premium side, but at least you won’t have to invest in an entire new bike to head off on your own multi-day adventure.
