WHO would want to attack Ken Barlow? Surely he’s not exciting enough to bash about and leave for dead at the bottom of the stairs?

However, that appears to be what has happened, and now the burning question is – who was responsible?

When Ken finally comes round in hospital, he is aghast when DS Mackinnon tells him that he has been the victim of an assault.

Unable to recall the night in question, Ken takes exception when Mackinnon suggests to him that a member of his own family may be responsible.

But as the likely culprits gather at his bedside, above, Ken begins to wonder if she might be right.

Eventually, as his recovery gathers pace, the usually plucky pensioner admits he’s frightened to return home.

Meanwhile, his children and grandchildren begin hurling accusations at each other, and as Daniel plans to leave town to escape the accusations, the finger of suspicion is pointed at Peter, who needs Chloe to act as his alibi.

Elsewhere, Eileen gives Phelan a fright while having her first driving lesson, while Bethany’s heart looks set to be broken, and Kevin’s finances hit rock bottom.
