Supermarket relocating to site of former primary school
A CYNON Valley Co-op is to move to the site of a former primary school.
The new store will be at the location of the former Hirwaun Primary School on Brecon Road – a 2,500sq ft site, and will open in summer 2018.
It means the existing Coop in Hirwaun, on Tramway Road, will close, and all 15 jobs moved over to the new store. The company says the new site, a £570,000 investment, will be at the “heart of the community”, and will have an in-store bakery, locally sourced products and a focus on healthy, fresh food.
John Hillman, regional acquisitions manager for the Co-op, said: “We’re looking forward to opening a new store in Hirwaun. We’re delighted to have the opportunity to provide shoppers with our wide range of awardwinning food, in a store designed to be easy to use for everyone.
“The new store will also bring a funding boost for community groups through the Co-op’s recently-launched membership scheme. Members receive a 5% reward on purchases of own-branded products and services, with a further 1% going directly to local causes.”
Tony Hind, the supermarket’s head of new store development, added: “We’re committed to finding great locations for our new stores, we know people want to be able to buy high quality food near to where they live and work, in handy-sized shops open at convenient times.
“We opened 100 new stores last year and will open another 100 again this year and are always on the lookout for new sites where we can be at the heart of local life.”
It comes after another Co-op store opened in Cwmbach earlier this month, marking its return to a community with links dating back to the 1850s.
It opened on September 7, and is located at the old car dealership site in Canal Road.
